Primitive Methodist Chapel, Burton Road, Withington

A former Primitive Methodist chapel stands
on the corner of Old Moat Lane and Burton
Road. Primitive Methodism was a movement
in English Methodism from about 1807 until
the union with Wesleyan Methodism and
United Methodism in 1932 to form the
Methodist Church of Great Britain. The
church's foundation stone (much defaced)
is dated 1891. It was designated a place
of worship in 1892, and closed in September
1954 when the congregation amalgamated
with the Methodist Church (ex-Wesleyan) in
the village centre. It is now an Adult Learning
Centre. See Withington Methodism and the
Village history pages for more details.

meeting in Mrs Royle's cottage. The first
chapel, however was opened in 1862 in
Ladybarn Lane and was known as 'Mount
Pleasant'. This was succeeded by a larger
chapel in Royle Street, opened in 1868,
which in turn was succeeded by a new
church in Ladybarn Lane, opened in 1900.
The Sunday school, which had continued in Royle Street, moved to new premises in
Kingswood Road in 1955. The chapel is
now used as residential flats. [May, 2014]
