The
75th Anniversary Party of Withington Firestation 2013
Withington
Community Firestation stands on Wilmslow Road at the corner
with Arnfield Road. It was originally shared with a police
station, but in 1938 became a dedicated firestation, so 2013
was its 75th anniversary.
A party to celebrate the event was held in gloriously hot summer weather on Saturday, July 13th, running from 10am-4pm. There was much to see, and to buy and consume! The firestation provided two engines and also a vintage fire-engine. There was a vintage ice-cream vendor, fire-dogs (trained to rescue in hostile situations), the unveiling of a new artwork, refreshments, music and stalls, including the Withington Civic Society stall offering 1930s games for children, and a history display of Withington in the 1930s. Thanks to Steve Twinn and his team of firefighters for arranging the celebrations, and to Rita Whitehead and Debbie Hey and all others who helped create and serve at the Civic Society's stall, and to Nicola Clarke for the history display. On
the day of the celebrations, there was a serious fire in
Manchester city centre in which one firefighter lost his
life and several were injured. Withington firefighters were
called out to help in this emergency.
